Breaking News (August 2022)
As is the case with many similar organisations, COVID-19 travel restrictions had a serious impact on IPMEN. Initially we were forced to postpone our IPMEN Hawai’i 2020 conference so we moved the conference dates from July 2020 to July 2021. However, the ongoing pandemic meant that we were then compelled to abandon our ambitious plans for IPMEN in Hawai’i and cancel this conference altogether.
Being a relatively small organisation and one that relies mainly on the contribution of volunteers along with the generous financial support of organisations, such as the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council, the last two years have been somewhat quiet for IPMEN but now we are again looking at reviving what IPMEN does best and that is meeting face-to-face to share our ocean knowledge and experiences.
Although our planning is at an early stage, IPMEN is once again looking at working with the National Marine Educators Association (NMEA) to run parallel conferences – this time on the shores of the Salish Sea.
- The NMEA 2023 conference “Strait to the Sound: Gathering at the Salish Sea” will be held at the Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington, USA from Sunday, July 23 to Thursday, July 27, 2023.
- At present, the proposed dates for the IPMEN 2023 conference would be from Tuesday July 18 to FridayJuly 21, 2023. Although we have not yet finalised a venue or a title for this conference, our aim is to hold the conference in Victoria on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. As this venue is just across the water from Bellingham, we will most likely include reference to the Salish Sea in our conference title and, as with earlier IPMEN conferences, we will aim to deliver a strong focus on linking Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) with Ocean Literacy.
Throughout September and October 2022, the IPMEN committee will be working to finalise our plans for IPMEN 2023 and, most importantly, to secure sponsorship for our return to delivering immersive TEK and ocean themed conferences.
